Parents and Education Department embroiled in birth certificate row
Vashi2Panvel.com: Navi Mumbai: March 20: Navi Mumbai Municipal Education (NMME) Department is amidst controversies as parents are not willing to accept the new rule imposed on them. According to the rule, the NMME will keep the original birth certificates submitted while admitting students in class I in all the state board schools, including the private-owned. The birth certificate would not be returned even after the student passes out from the school.
While parents of almost all the students are unhappy with the regulation, the NMME officials have their own set of ‘valid’ explanations for the same. Says J.N. Sawant Head Constable in C.I.S.F at Vashi, “People continuing in the same school would not have a problem, but what about people like us? I am working in Paramilitary Force and we get transfer orders very often. If I want to change my child’s school, how will I produce the documents?” Mrs Sarita Jadhav (Housewife) questions, “What does a student do if he has to change a school as the other school too would need the original documents? I feel the NMME should give some certificate so that the children can take admission in any other school without problems. The school principals on the other hand feel helpless as they are only following the orders of the higher department. Sharad Borke, Principal, Bhartiya Vidyapeeth High school says. “This is a rule made by Navi Mumbai Education Department so we have to follow it.” But Principal of Nandugal. T.R Airoli Madyamik School said that there should not be any problems even after the new rule has been enforced. “Yes, we take birth certificates to ensure if a child is an Indian citizen but if any student wants to change his school we give the leaving certificate too. The NMME official, SP Gaikwad states, “The reason behind taking Birth Certificate is to have proof of nationality of each and every student. If any parent want to change their child’s school, they can take a letter from the education department and submit it to any other school and take admission in that school without any problem. If any student want to change their school we provide them with bonafide Certificte or leaving certificate. I don't understand what the issue is all about.” By Uma Waghamare
