From God’s Own Country to Navi Mumbai - Kerala Cuisine
Vashi2Panvel.Com: Navi Mumbai: February 23: The Cuisine of Kerala is well known for its mildly flavored and gently cooked food. To our delight we can now have a taste of Kerala and its traditional spices at our very own Navi Mumbai joint, OM SAI, the new Kerala family restaurant at sector 8, Nerul. Rajan K.K., the owner of the place himself welcomes visitors with a broad smile.
“I had a Kerala cuisine restaurant of a similar kind in Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (MSCT) renowned as Hotel Paris. It has just been 7 days I have shifted to Nerul”. So is this new joint being able to attract enough customers with an eye for traditional delicacies? “The crowd has been coming in though it has been just a week. We have the traditional cuisine but we customize according to the demands of the customers”, says Mr. Rajan. Om Sai is a clean and hygienic place with a wide variety available to choose from. In the breakfast, Puttu which is rice flour dough layered with grated coconut and steamed in a hollow bamboo cylinder is the traditional favourite. Another delightful specialty available for breakfast is the 'Appam with kadala curry'. Appam is a pancake made from a rice flour and toddy batter. Other favourites are the regular Idlis, dosas, onion uttapa, tomato ottappam, medu wada and others all made in the traditional Kerala style. For the lunch and dinner delight they have the mouth-watering traditional Kerala thali in veg and non-veg. These thalis priced at Rs. 20 and Rs. 35 are amongst the most enjoyed and opted for dishes by the customers. Besides, chicken, mutton and fish specialties are available all cooked in the traditional spices enchanting our taste buds with the typical Kerala flavour and aroma. Besides the delicacies listed in the menu, other delicacies that are typical of the Kerala cuisine can also be made on demand. “We can make all kinds of dishes that are typical to Kerala but however we don’t make them everyday because there is no demand for them. Like we made the Neer dosa for the first few days but no one asked for it so it went waste. Thus we stopped making it from then”, says the owner. However what’s most pleasing about the place is the friendly owner who also acts as the temporary cook and waiter besides handling the billing! By Sumisha Arora
