Profiling the oldest typing school of Navi Mumbai
Vashi2Panvel.com: Navi Mumbai: November 23: In this jet age where speed and being in competition means survival, does something as simple and as basic as typewriting have any value? Many computer users seem to carry on well by just using both their index fingers. But in Nerul, there is an organization, which seems to be making it big by teaching the basic skill of typing.
Ms Rita C Vazirani, is the owner of Vazir School of Commerce the first and the oldest school in Navi Mumbai teaching typing and short hand. The institute established in 1986 got government recognition within a year or two. But then one wonders does the college still have students joining in to learn typing or even short hand? To this Ms Rita says, “Yes, I certainly have many students in my college. Approximately there are about 100 – 150 students now in different batches working on 14 typewriters. But earlier we used to have about 80 – 90 students and they were working on only five machines. The number of students should have increased but it has not increased proportionately thanks to the advent of computers.” After every six months there are is a certificate issued to every student appearing for a typing exam called Government Certificate Course. The certificate is given only after appearing in this exam and the shorthand students get their certificate after they clear the typing exam. The college has typing in three different languages – hindi, marathi and english. The fee for the course is Rs. 100 while the fee for the short hand course is Rs 150. Ask her, if the quality of students has fallen or is there any change. To this Ms. Rita says, “Of course there is a change, earlier the students though very less, came with a dedication and sincerity of getting a government job as typing or shorthand is mandatory for a government job. But now the students are such that after a lot of failure attempts at getting a job or after learning computers they come to us just with the motive of increasing their speed. The fee is also low and they try out all sort of things with the machine, use it roughly and then when they are tired they just leave it. We also have a fast track course where the students can practice for any number of hours. But again the students don’t have patience to sit for hours. Most of them don’t even give the exam.” She surely seems to be frustrated with the students attitude towards a course that helps them in getting a government job or even in increasing their computer typing speed.
