Forever Love: 9-mths-old married couple commit suicide on Valentine's Day
Vashi2Panvel.Com: Navi Mumbai: February 16: "Jeena hai tere sath …. marna hai tere sath…" is the main psychology of couples committing a pact suicide, says Dr. Alexander Martin, psychiatrist, Jayraj Hospital (CBD, near MGM hospital), . Shirish Mahatre and Mauri were married for just 9 months before they committed suicide on Valentine's Day at Serwane village, Nerul.
Theirs was an arranged marriage, fixed by their parents. The couple committed suicide by slitting their wrists and smearing each other's blood on their forheads. "Tilak of love", says a grief-stricken Vinod, Shirish's elder brother. Vinod stayed in the same building but a different flat. Rakhmabai, Shirish's mother who used to live with the ill-fated couple, is shattered by their deaths. And bewildered. "They never fought with each other nor with any family members". She added that in fact both had gone for shopping for the Valentine's Day and had bought gifts for all family members. "It was so unexpected and so sad" cries Shirish's father. Shirish's bother, Vinod was the one to notice it first when he went to their house. Mauri's parents stay at Ghansoli and after marriage she stayed with her husband and in-laws at Serwane Village, Nerul. 137 suicides in Navi Mumbai in the last one year As per the police records there were 137 suicidal cases in all in Navi Mumbai in the last one year. Crime branch PSI Kharavas says, "There are only a handful of couple suicides. The rest are all single persons." Dr. Martine added that more than psychological the reason for such couple suicide is social. They want to show the people that they lived together and died together. They are more involved in each other; this is an illusion of doubles syndrome in psychology. The other reasons can be, depression, family pressure, peer pressure as well as professional depression that provoke couples to end their lives. Suicide help lines state that more than couples it's the individual who always reaches suicide out for help. But Sheetal Mehta from a helpline (name withheld on request), says That couples who look happy from outside are not always so. She added that on the face of it, the couple may look happy, but they could be intensely unhappy without anyone being the wiser. "We get maximum calls from male lovers who are not successful in their love affairs. The couple calls comes once in six months." Suicidal? Reach out for help.
