Social Work: career with a difference
Vashi2Panvel.Com: Navi Mumbai: October 13: Social work today has come far from the days when it used to be the prerogative of a few visionaries who believed they could make a difference to the way people lived, but didn't have adequate resources. True, even today, not just anybody can get into this field and hope to build conventionally "successful" careers.
Vashi2Panvel.Com talked with Gazalla Shaikh, working as a Social Worker with Mitri, an NGO. She did Master in Social Service from Tata Institute of Social Sciences in 2003. “ I opted this career as I wanted to help the people and make a difference in their life”. She said that the difference between a professional social worker and a social worker is that a professional worker can analysis the problem and do the social diagnoses of the case. Then he/she can solve the problem by giving it a social treatment,” says Gazalla. She adds further, “I never wanted to do a 9-5 job and this is the best way I can give my best to the society.” She concluded that we not only serving the society but also a draw a decent salary. Kartiki Shastry Who can apply: After Class XII (any subject) one can apply for the Graduate Courses in social service. And after Graduation in any subject one can apply for Master in Social Work (MSW), though preference is given to students who had either sociology or social science at the graduation level. Specialization can be done here in: 1. Criminology and correctional work find jobs in prisons, and government departments 2. Medical and psychiatric social work in clinics, hospitals, sanatoria, child guidance clinics, counseling centers, mental hospitals, medical colleges and community public health centers 3. Community development are involved in fieldwork with community groups, government and voluntary agencies. Several Non Governmental Agencies (NGO's) are engaged in welfare work 4. Labour welfare and industrial relations work in personnel department of Industrial and Corporate sectors 5. Childcare and family services and work in family planning and Aids programmes 6. Awareness campaigns of the government. World organizations such as the United Nations sponsor projects to facilitate developing countries in their social welfare and other developmental programmes. Those interested in pursing a career in education or research could pursue M.Phil and Ph.D. in this field after MSW. How to apply: Admission is made through a written test and followed by an interview. The test assesses mental ability and general awareness of the students and the interview is aimed to identify candidates with genuine interest in social work.
