Disaster management studies enter school curriculum
Vashi2Panvel.Com: Navi Mumbai: September 18: After a string of natural disasters and the recent 7/11 mishap in Mumbai, the State government has decided to implement a special subject on “Disaster Management” in the primary and secondary students’ syllabus of Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai.
This will be added in their curriculum so that they have the basic knowledge to respond at the time of crisis. The government has also planned to involve NGO’s in this move. This has already being taken up by the Central board when they introduced this subject in the previous academic year, but the state education board has started planning for it now. “It is a very good step taken by the government and the education department to involve kids in the basic knowledge about the relief work to be taken, whenever any tragedy happens in and around their area,” feels Manju Shastry, a teacher at St.Joseph School, New Panvel. “The involvement of NGO’s in the entire process helps the students to gain a different outlook and enable them to look at a situation from a different perspective,” she opines. The others also feel that it a right step taken at a right time by the government. “There is an importance of the basic behavioral education to be imparted to the students apart from their regular course material,” avers Priya D., Head teacher of C.K.T. Vidyalaya, Panvel. “The implementation of such kind of a course in the curriculum will help the students in a big way even in the later years of their life,” she adds. The education department has also decided to organize seminars in the schools conducted by various NGO’s who are involved in the disaster management in their area. This will add a practical touch to the subject. “The course structure is ready but we are still working in the alignment and proper arrangement of the material in hand, this will include the case studies to deal with the natural disasters along with the terrorist planted mishaps, so that the students have a good idea about the situation,” reveals a source from the education department. A right move at a right moment is always considered good. The education department of the state has finally realized the importance of practicality in the education scenario. Though the students will now have one more subject to crack their brains upon, but they will surely realise its importance in the years to come. Smriti Mishra
