Vashi2Panvel.Com: Navi Mumbai: September 1: “Is the symmetry right, the proportion correct, the balance appropriate?” These are the most frequent discussions happening amongst the architecture students about their projects and thesis work. This career option has been there since many years but has gained importance in more recent years. With the coming up of new projects in the city and the remodelling work going on in full swing, there is lot of scope and options for an architect. Shreela Sharan, a final year B.Arch student from J.J.College of Architecture and Arts, Mumbai shares her views and experience during the four-year course.

The drawing and sketching skills are a major pre requisite for someone who is an aspirer of this course. “I mainly joined the course because it was a very good option for me to display my creativity, the entire course structure is such that it requires you to imagine from various sides, from various angles, i.e. the 3rd perspective of any object,” expresses Shreela. The course structure is very comprehensive for this 4and a 1/2-year course, which covers both theory and practical subjects.

“We have subjects like interior placement designing and space utilization, which give us inputs on the proper spacing methods and the appropriate ways to make the most of the available space,” she explicates. The theory subjects in the course are the ones which give us a thorough background on the basics of the entire system at work. The group projects in the course also help the students to gather all the creative ideas together and work on them. “The thesis which we have to submit as our final year project is the most comprehensive of all and that decides most of your marks,” she says.

The placement cell in the college provides full support to the students for the assistance in their work. “We have this placement cell in our college which organizes regular meetings for the students from 3rd year onwards, this keeps the students updated about the happenings in the industry as such,” she elucidates. The college gets the companies according to the brand name it carries with itself and the number of years of the course being there. “As I am doing it in J.J., it already has a great value associated with it, so very good companies come here for recruitment,” she expresses.

“This is a good career option in present scenario as many constructions are going on in various parts and there are lot more option for one who wants to enter interior decoration and designing as such after this course,” explains Shreela.

The industry also opens a wide opportunities for the professionals in this field. “The field is such that it has never ending opportunities, the course as such has many good prospects for the students,” opines Amar Saxena, from Identity Architects in C.B.D. “The remuneration in the industry is quite good, it is around Rs.10, 000 for a fresher and it multiplies as you gain experience, free lancing also pays off well,” he adds.

Some other professionals from the industry feel that it makes no difference from which college have you done your graduation. “In the initial one year it counts but then only your work matters, it is the experience which creates impact later,” says Joydeep Mukherjee, a Vashi based architect.

The field offers wide options to choose from as a career alternative, so if you are good with sketching and imagination this is the right field for you.

How to Apply:
The admissions to these colleges are through All India Engg Entrance Exam (AIEEE) conducted by C.B.S.E. and the C.E.T. by Maharashtra State board of education. The notifications are out in the month of November.
