Vashi2Panvel.Com: Navi Mumbai: August 29: The S.I.E.S. (Nerul) College of Science and Commerce had been functioning under a temporary Principal till August this year until U.B.Jangam joined the college as Principal. The new principal has over 30 years of experience in the field of teaching. He has been associated with RAIT, Nerul since last 22 years. Vashi2Panvel took this exclusive interview to know more about his plans for the future of S.I.E.S. (Nerul)and his long-term goals. The excerpts of the interview: Something about your background:

I did my graduation in science from the Kolhapur University and then I did my post graduation in Relativity in 1972. After this, I joined the university. I did research fellowship from the university for 4 years. Then, I moved on as a Maths professor in the Sholapur University for next 8 years. Next in ’84, I joined Ramrao Adik Institue of Technology, Nerul, Navi Mumbai as a Maths professor. I was in this college for the past 22 years i.e. before joining S.I.E.S. (Nerul) as principal on 11th August this year.

First thing you are concentrating upon as the new head of S.I.E.S.
I am currently paying more attention on the post-graduate courses in the college. For this work to be done properly I need to do coordinate with the university and see that the implementation is done on proper time. The postgraduate courses which are presently available in the college are IT and computer sciences, we are trying to introduce courses like post graduation in geopolitics.

What is your first impression about the college:
I think the institute is more professional and disciplined in its own way. The professors and office management staff are very efficient in their work. The students are quite good; they are focused in whatever they do. Recently two of our students from S.Y.B.Com were selected for CNBC TV18 Quiz semifinals. Though I did not get chance to meet any particular student in particular, I have interacted with them in the corridors.

About quota and reservation policies:
The government and Arjun Singh must have seen all the statistics and then decided upon this policy. I think this will not influence the standard of education of the premium institutes of the country, as they are not taking anyone in without setting any minimum requirement. Even if you are from the reserved category you have to get that minimum cutoff anyhow. If the general category seats remain the same it will make no difference and would probably won’t harm them much.

Long term plans and goal for the college:
I am planning to get the college NAAC (National Acknowledgement Accredition certificate). This is a national level accreditation, which is considered prestigious for the college. The college gets it on consideration of various factors like faculty, quality of education, infrastructure and most important, the result produced by the college. As this college already has an ISO accreditation which itself is very good, but in future we would try to make it better.

The BMM Lab has been into consideration since long; have any further actions been done on that aspect:
The college as such is facing space constraints, the talks with the management are on and we have to see when can we finally implement the plan. The lab is an essential requirement of the students as they have many projects to work upon.

There have been reports that the IT department of the college lacks good teachers, have college authorities thought anything in this direction:
These are all rumors as the professors are all well trained and professionals in their respective areas. The performances can be very well seen in the results of the students from that department. The college is well recognized for its quality learning and we see to it that students get best training.

The students from Navi Mumbai have been going to Mumbai for professional courses, as they have a mind block that Navi Mumbai colleges will not provide them with that kind of exposure…
I think the students should understand that even Navi Mumbai has good education options and facilities for them. The students of the city have lately started realizing that and currently we have seen that not only Navi Mumbai but students from Mumbai are taking admissions in colleges here.
