Getting Candid with Hrithik Roshan
Vashi2Panvel.Com: Navi Mumbai: July 7: “I don’t consider myself as a talented actor. I think I am a hardworking actor who is considered talented!” laughs the green-eyed Roshan. ‘Considered considerably talented’ one might add, judging by the curiosity and eagerness with which the audience awaits a Roshan film, specially a Rakesh Roshan- Hrithik Roshan film. Krrish has released last month and the box-office is overwhelmed with the response. A first of its kind, Krrish is the sequel to Koi Mil Gaya. In fact the last time his fans saw him on screen was with Koi Mil Gaya. Unbelievably stingy with his films, almost always had one film release a year. Why is it that you have been doing just one movie a year?
“I’m not taking one movie a year! This year I have three films coming up” I believe you have spent a lot of time preparing for your role in Krrish. Is it true? “I spent a lot of time working on my character Krishna and his physical appearance for this character is completely opposite to my character in Koi Mil Gaya. I had to lose 7 kgs for that film but for this one I had to put on 7 kgs. Krishna is this guy who has all the powers in the world but yet needs to be projected in such an innocent and endearing manner, which is not an easy task to accomplish. I spent 1 ½ month in Hongkong undergoing enormous amount of physical training. I learnt martial arts from Shanghai and spent a lot of time creating the look desired to fit the character” ![]() “Acting is all about imagination. You have to imagine things that aren’t really there and base your performance on that. It’s not an easy task and you require a lot of focus to do so. You have to have a very imaginative mind and it requires a lot of understanding of what is going to come. Nevertheless it is interesting” Discuss your growth as an actor from Kaho Na Pyar Hai to Krrish. “As a newcomer every actor tries to duplicate what he has seen as a child. The influence of the big stars is always there. I was also a victim of this for natural reasons. I was highly influenced by Raj Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchanji, Shah Rukh and others. But it is only after Koi Mil Gaya that I found in myself the actor called ‘Me’. Thus I always see my career as pre-Koi Mil Gaya and Post- Koi Mil Gaya” With so many other actors also discovering the real stuff within themselves, does it become difficult to deal with competition? “Competition is a battle to where someone pushes you towards excellence. Competition brings out the best in you and shows you how good you are. It makes you strive harder”, he adds. The Rakesh-Hrithik jugalbandhi has always worked. Is that the reason expectations are raised? “Expectations are based on your previous work. Dad and me have been successful last two times and thus there is an obvious reason for more expectations. The idea is to do good work and keep raising the expectations and of course then living up to those expectations” Comment on your chemistry with you father at work. “I think an actor is the last link to put across what the director wants to portray to the audience. It is thus necessary for him to understand the director. With dad obviously it’s easier because we share a relation beyond just an actor-director. Being a hired actor there is always an invisible line of limit that exists where one has to restrain himself. But with dad I share a similar belief--that it’s the big picture that’s most important. Even if there is difference of opinion, we sit down and discuss our points of view and it is the better thought that wins.” As a veteran Hollywood actor had once remarked, “Feeling the flutter is fine. It’s only when you stop feeling it, that you need to worry. For then you know that your time has come and gone.” With Hrithik Roshan, one is convinced that his ‘Time’ has come to stay.
