'Toothpaste is not important, brushing technique is'
Vashi2Panvel.Com: Navi Mumbai: June 16: Some tortures are physical, And some are mental, But the one that is both, Is dental...This is what the famous English poet Ogden Nash opines in his poem ‘This Is Going To Hurt Just A Little Bit’ but a dentist would never approve of it! There are a plethora of famous quotes and proverbs criticizing the dentist and his profession. Like Mark Twain once said ‘Adam and Eve had many advantages, but the principal one was that they escaped teething’. But the truth is dental problems are rampant today and dentistry, the most flourishing profession.
Toothache is considered as the most appalling pain as it erupts anytime without any notice. Dentists put the blame on the changing lifestyle and wrong food habits of the people. “Nowadays youngsters have adopted the fast food culture. They thrive upon all kinds of junk food ranging from pastries to burgers which are harmful for your teeth,” says Dr. Shakila Mulla, a practicing dental surgeon at New Panvel. “They don’t take care of the hygiene and thus decaying teeth may result in pain,” she adds. The most thought about concern amongst the people is bad breath, which reduces our poise to interact confidently. There are many reasons for this. The busy schedule of the people does not allow them to have a balanced diet at regular intervals. “Not many of us know that this is one of the prime causes of the problem. Increasing intake of water also reduces the chances of bad breath,” the doctor says adding further, “Water cleans up the mouth and thus washes off any of the food particles stuck between the teeth. However, the use of mouthwash is another alternative. It also has no side effects. But doctors do not recommend mouth freshener sprays because it is addictive and you tend to have bad breath if not used regularly. “There is a technique called scaling which is done to remove the plaque and tartar from the teeth. This in turn lessens the possibility of bad breath,” explains Dr. Mulla. The lack of fibrous food in the diet provides less exercise to the teeth muscles and thus there is not enough jaw movement. When asked about toothpaste that she would recommend she says, “Any toothpaste would do but if you have some dental problem, fluoridated toothpaste is suggested. However it’s not recommended to children.” As per Dr.Mulla the choice of toothpaste is not a matter of concern. “Brushing technique is more important. People should use a soft bristle brush of minimum 100 bristles and should change their brush every three months,” she suggests. A visit to the dentist in every six months and regular dental checkup along with proper care will definitely bring you a smile… Smriti Mishra The latest techniques used to dentists in the west 1. Ultrasonic Scalors for cleaning of teeth. 2. Airpolishing unit for polishing stained teeth. 3. Electrocautry for gum surgeries and other allied treatments. 4. Today's dentists, who have extensive training and experience in the continually expanding cosmetic dentistry field, use both science and artistry to create the smile they want.
