Nothing so sweet about it

Vashi2Panvel.Com: Navi Mumbai: June 12: ‘I love sweets, but I can’t have them…this is the most frequent statement made by the patients who suffer from what is commonly called 'Sugar' in broad terms and 'Diabetes' in more accurate medical term. Statistics in a medical journal reveal that almost one out of every 5 person staying in India is a diabetes patient. There are certain myths associated with this disease. Some believe that it is hereditary in nature while others negate the prior opinion. However there are many prescriptions and precautions to be taken so that this overtly sweet disease doesn’t take a toll on you.
Diabetes Mellitus is just a type of the disease, which is caused when a gland in our body called pancreas is unable to secrete a required amount of hormone called “insulin”. This “Insulin” is responsible for the breakdown of the sugar. In the absence of insulin, the sugar taken in by a patient doesn’t digest and starts accumulating in the body creating problems. Due to this, patients feel pain in their muscles and get red sore eyes after having something heavy in their meal. Doctors say that a diabetes patient must include amla, garlic, bittergaurd, dalia, salads as far as possible and avoid having starchy food like potato, rice, sweet potato, sweet fruits like banana, papaya, cheeko etc.

“People feel that their forefathers had the disease, so it is an established fact that they will be a patient in future, “says Dr.C.D.Rathod, a private practitioner. “I won’t deny the fact that most of the patients of this disease have a history of this in their family, but the hereditary nature of this is still to be proved scientifically. This is because there are cases that have diabetes with no one in their family since last four generations,” he points. Besides, there are certain ayurvedic remedies available for the treatment of the disease without any side effects. These are the powdered form of the herbs which helps to control sugar level in the body. On speaking to an ayurvedic practitioner, Dr. Vijay Pandey of Kalyan, he said, “It is evident that ayurvedic medicines have proved effective, here we have many herbs and barks of many trees powdered which helps to reduce the sugar levels in the body.” He added that these medicines are available in the medical stores containing ayurvedic medicines.

The major cause of this disease is the lifestyle of the person. “If you are leading a life with all fatty foodstuffs with not much physical work to do, you are most susceptible to this disease. However, regular exercise and walking will reduce the chances to some extent. There are certain stages of the disease on account of its level of occurrence. If a person reaches the highest level, the last option as a medication is the insulin injections available,” says the doctor adding, “However we recommend switching into the insulin injection only if the other drugs have failed.”
