Mother’s day: some appreciate it, few don’t
Vashi2Panvel: Navi Mumbai: May 13: Mother's Day, originated in the United States with the initiative taken by a social activist named Julia Ward. The day was established as a national holiday in 1914 when Congress passed a joint resolution designating the second Sunday in May as a day set aside to honor mothers. President Woodrow Wilson signed the congressional resolution, and we've been observing Mother's Day ever since. Mother’s day in India is viewed upon as a very special day for all those people who want to express their love to their moms. They do something to make their moms feel special, like some people like in giving gifts to their beloved mom’s whereas others like to go out for a family dinner and celebrate the day by cutting a cake. But is there really a need to have a day separately for mothers?
Ask Neha Rohra, a resident of Vashi about her feelings for the day and she spontaneously replies, “Well, in today’s world everybody is busy with their own work and no one has a spare time for themselves too, so I strongly feel there should be a special day for mothers through which we express our love.” So is she planning some surprise for her mom? “Well, nothing special, but yeah, I would be helping her in the kitchen work, which I rarely do and I would be polite to her entire day without fighting or cribbing about anything,” she says smilingly. Radhika Bahety, a BMS graduate and yet another resident of Vashi has some different plans for the day. “I am going to take my Mom for a splendid surprise dinner and gift her a lovely card,” she says excitedly. Celebrities are thrilled about Mother’s Day too. One such celebrity is Sudeepa Singh, an ad model and a debut lead in an up coming serial on Sony television, admits, “This day encourages true expression towards mother and I feel it’s wonderful to have such day. I personally share great rapport with my mom and she is my best friend. Working in Mumbai, I feel lonely sometimes and miss my mom a lot.” She is going to give a surprise gift – a diamond jewellery to her mom by her own earned money. Do mothers feel unique about the day dedicated to them? “I am quite appreciative about this concept as this is the only day when our children can revert back in little way for all the things we have done for them and all the scarifies we made.” says Niranjana Mathur - 48, a resident of Nerul. So is she expecting some out of the box surprise from her daughter? “Not really, but then you never know!” Where some feel great about the concept of mother’s day, there are few who feel other way round. As a popular adage goes, “Every coin has two sides,” even such days have mixed views. Sashank Kamra - 21, a resident of Nerul when inquired about his views, he bluntly says, “Oh, is it Mother’s Day tomorrow? Well, it doesn’t really matter because I personally don’t believe in such days. It’s plainly for commercial reasons?” Seems he doesn’t admire this esteemed day. “It’s not about disrespecting this day, but I guess you don’t need a special day to express love to your Mother. You love her that day and you love her everyday, it doesn’t make much difference,” he argues and signs off. Manali H. Shah
