'BMM deals with specific focus on media industry'
Vashi2Panvel.Com: Navi Mumbai: May 8: Purani jeans, aur guitar… mohalle ki chhatt aur mere yaar… sang Haider Ali to mark the concluding days of the most cherished College life. Many students, while in school, fancy about their ‘going-to-be’ college days. But to make this life enjoyable and pleasant it is imperative to make the first correct move. Many students are unable to make the right decision about their career and end up in a wrong course. Vashi2Panvel.Com endeavours to help students by giving opinions from graduates and post-graduates about their college life, how good the course they did is, what are the recommended colleges, how was the learning experience and so on. The series sparks off today with a BMM graduate, Umma Saini who has just given her final exams from SIES (Nerul) College. She is working as Operational Manager at Fair Deal Entertainment.
Spending three years in BMM (Bachelors of Mass Media) has been the most fulfilling experience of my life till date. Not only in terms of learning and knowledge but also as a time well spent. As the saying goes – “It’s not how many years you have in your life, its how much life you have in your years.” Having said that, I would like to specify that you can only enjoy your vocation if it’s the one that suits your interests. Otherwise, the flipside is readily available. What the course is and can do for you: To begin with, BMM is a professional and specialized course. It deals with the specific focus on the media industry and the various options available in it. Attempt is made to make one go through the entire nuances of the media within the classroom, as the subjects are practical and equip one to have a fair deal of knowledge and method to approach the actual industry. As the course is that of Bachelors in Mass Media, the first four semesters out of the six, explore the media industry and also provide deep insights into the society that the media is closely associated with and influences to a great extent. Involving subjects that illustrate the various options possible in the field apart from a dash of its history. From ‘Understanding Cinema’ to ‘Photography’ and ‘PR’ to ‘Cultural Studies’ the subjects are extremely varying yet connected. In the final year, there is a choice of specialization in Advertising and Journalism. Life in BMM: Is busy. You don’t even realize as the time slips by and it’s already the next sem. Majorly, the days are occupied by a lot of projects, big and small, of all the subjects. Presentations become a way of life. Deadlines are a forgotten entity and we are forever pleading to have them extended….and if they don’t, generally no one cares. Except, of course, for the few nerds without whom any classroom is incomplete (with due respect and no offences). Exams are greeted with a big moan and we sulk our way through them. Reality bite: Forever shortage of good notes…actually any notes. It is a lot of fun. Various events keep coming up. There are fests to handle and teachers to lie to. So it’s pretty cool. Doing so many projects together and living out of each others houses, it actually starts feeling that you are entering a second home when you come to college every morning. BMM is a very good course for the ones who know that they want to do this. As I said, its professional and non-performance can be demotivating, so think this through. There is a lot of room for proactivity and life is abuzz. You can actually pursue internships in the vacations and energize your profile. Actually, BMM empowers you to chart your own stuff out. Possible careers are of course those in journalism or advertising. Also, options include Film Making, PR, Photography, Creative Writing, and many more. Post BMM, PG can be pursued in specific interests. One thing is also true, qualifications will help you grow but success in ‘this’ field depends on where your talents lie and how much can you contribute. That is the primary requirement. Good luck. Have fun. Those who would like to share their college experiences may send us their inputs at v2p@vashi2panvel.com
